Is India ready to face cyber attacks?
As you remember 12 October 2020 power blacked in Mumbai for few hours. The government's cybersecurity agencies suspected that it could be a Cyberattack by state-sponsored cybercriminals. Now details came out that, it was caused by Chinese Hackers to sabotage the backbone of Indian Financial Capital. It has been detected that the malware “shadow pad” injected into the power grid network system and gained control thereby disrupted the power supply.
In Modern times the methodology of conventional war is changed. Instead of military attacks, the state-sponsored hackers targeting the basic infrastructure of the inimical countries causing irreparable damage. It has come to notice that, after the assassination of Qasem Soleimani, an Iranian major general that took place on 3 January 2020 by the United States by drone strike at Baghdad International Airport, Iranian hacker targeted the American power grid and penetrated malware in the controlling system to gain access and attack. But it was detected by American cybersecurity agencies and did the massive cleanup operation. In the year 2017, several attempts made by North Korea to test its missiles turn futile. The rate of failure of similar types of missiles by Russia is 13% but the North Korean rate of failure was 88%. It is because the North Korean defense network has been hacked by other agencies and caused the sabotage of their missile development program.
Normally this type of news will not come out immediately as the subject matter is under the government's control but will come out unless it is exposed by agencies, not under the control of the country of interest.
Indian Agencies will be monitoring around the clock protecting the network of vital installations. Sometimes the cybercriminals bypass the security and successful in planting malware, thereby taking the control of the network or system.
Instead of launching a military attack by the enemy countries, they clandestinely try to do financial sabotage, espionage of defense-related establishments and take revenge. After the Galwan issue, the Chinese hackers became active and making several attempts to penetrate Indian computer network systems of various fields.
I hope our agencies are capable of detecting such penetrations and do cleanup work to safeguard national Interest.
