as you might be aware that, the well-known journalist Nidhi Razdan who worked as Editor in NDTV for almost 21 years falls prey to phishing and resigned from her job to join Harvard University as an Associate. Professor, Department of Journalism which is not existing at-all.
Asper her tweet, she said that in the month of June 2020 she got an email purported to have been sent by Harvard university offering her post of Associate Professor in Journalism and need to join in the month of June. After few days she was informed that due to the pandemic situation classes were postponed and classes will resume in the month of January 2021. meanwhile, she submitted her resignation to NDTV. It is pertinent to note that, she has participated in several debates in the NDTV on the capacity of Associate professor Harvard University. She said in her tweet that, she notices several anomalies and then contacted higher authorities of Harvard University and also shared the email correspondence she received regarding her appointment. To her surprise, she was informed by the University authority that, they don't have a department of Journalism and so no mail was sent to her appointing her as Associate Professor in Journalism.
It shows that how the phishing attack can influence a well-educated lady with 21 years of experience in journalism.
It is no surprise that most of the victims of phishing attacks are educated, entrepreneurs and employees.
In this particular case, Ms. Nidhi Razdan did not bother to cross-check with the University on receipt of her first email and paid a heavy price. In most phishing emails the fraudsters have used deceptive emails similar to the genuine email I D. For example if the genuine email ID is admin@harvard.edu they use admln@hrvard.edu. In some cases, they create the same genuine ID by using services of various portals available on the internet providing such services at a cost.
